This page introduces my 1978 Evolution Photo Essay Supplement.
This is an addendum to my Dry76/Wet78 Photo Essay, with additional pictures from the Evolution Basin area in California's Southern Sierra Nevada, taken in 1978. This trip was sponsored by a major organization, and took place during the first week of June in that year.
As you will see in the photos, this was a very heavy snow year. Our trip was very arduous. I made out OK, but one person in the group became hypothermic and was evacuated by helicopter. A teenage boy in the group refused to wear sunglasses, and ended up going snow blind, about 12 miles from the end of the trip. Unfortunately, the boy's condition was not known when the rescue helicopter was initially contacted, and the aircraft crew refused to take him on when the hypothermia victim was evacuated.
The highlight of the trip was an ascent of Mount Spencer. Our evacuation route, over Alpine Col and into Humphreys Basin, was also spectacular.
This supplemental photo essay consists of 16 images. You may view them as a slide show or an indexed list. For additional pictures, please view my Dry76/Wet78 Photo Essay. (Please note ... these pictures were taken with a 110 camera and ASA 64 slide film. The quality isn't the best, but I hope you appreciate the content.)
There is also a trip map (BIG, 400K).
This was a wild trip!
