KRFD Programming Card

I sent some memorabilia yesterday. I included some blank programming cards. These were our alternative to computerized playlists. They're almost self-explanatory, but I made a sample one to demonstrate it. We had five or six categories of music:

A. Heavy rotation. For new releases
B. Medium rotation. For older and up-and-coming releases
C. Recyclers. Where A's and B's went for a month, if they were well received
D. General rotation. Songs suitable for any daypart (air shift, time of day, as shown on the card 6-10am, 10-2 etc.)
E. Mellow songs
F. Hard songs. Mostly late night and overnight

Each category was color coded for ease of use.

On our music log we had blank spaces each designated for one of the categories. Coming out of commercial breaks we always played A's or B's. The rest of the selection was mixed. The cards were stored in a "shoebox", segregated by category. We were supposed to choose the first card in the category, and if it hadn't been played recently, or in the same time slot for the previous few weeks, we would play it, and fill in the date, as shown on the card. Once that was done, we would place it in the rear of the category, and choose our next song.

Few people followed this system very closely. Although the box had many tunes that weren't being played by the other stations, it was difficult to limit our selections when we had so many CD's and vinyl to choose from. A few songs were removed from the box though. I remember our new GM, Mr. Holden, went ballistic when Brad White played Dynamo Hum, with added matching sound effects, at 5:15 in the afternoon.
