This is the view looking north, toward downtown Sacramento, about four
miles upstream. |
Swirling water, seen from the
Sacramento River Levee Bike Trail, in Sacramento's Pocket Area, January
1, 2003. This is normal for winter conditions. The water level is far
below "warning" or "monitor" stage. |
As you watch the swirling water,
you can see all sorts of stuff floating by, including trees and quite
a bit of litter picked up from the river bank, as the water level rises.
This is nature in action, helped by upstream reservoir releases. The levee
bike trail, seen by the guardrail at top, is a wonderful recreational
resource and a commute route to downtown Sacramento. |
The view south along the Sacramento
River, from the Pocket Area Levee Bike Trail. Yolo County and West Sacramento
are on the opposite bank. The swirling patterns in the water surface are
a tipoff as to how foolish it is to swim in this dangerous, cold, and
murky water. Power boats ply this waterway on most days, but none were
out on this first day of 2003. |
